Supporting Students with a Refugee, DACA, or Undocumented Status

Speakers: Immigrant Student Resource Center

Federal, state, and institutional policies created college campus environments across Arizona that do not fully welcome, support, and celebrate students from refugee and immigrant backgrounds. Through their unique roles that place them at the forefront of college conversations with students, high school counselors engage with and help students navigate these policies on a regular basis. Through this discussion staff from the University of Arizona's Immigrant Student Resource Center will share testimonials and research to underscore how institutions and professionals isolate and render invisible many students with a refugee, DACA or undocumented status. Participants will identify disparities, oppressive structures, and stressors unique to refugee and immigrant youth in education. Participants will also engage in discussions to create strategies that collectively uplift students from refugee and immigrant backgrounds and re-establish support structures that better address their needs. Topics include DACA policies, university tuition rates, and scholarships will also be discussed.
