College Academy for Parents (High School)

College Academy for Parents is a college preparation program defined by the belief that informed parents can be the best advocates for their child's success in entering college.  The earlier parents begin to prepare and understand the college preparation process, the more likely they will be to successfully entera four-year university.

CAP is offered in three forms to serve elementary, middle school and high school families.  Below is a description of the different variations of the program, and who is eligible to participate:

 

Program Information
 

ELIGIBILITY: Must have  a 10th grade student attending Amphitheater, Cholla, Desert View, Flowing Wells, Pueblo, Rincon, Sunnyside or Tucson High School.

TIMEFRAME: Once a week during the month of November, and a campus visit on December 12, 2009.

DESCRIPTION: This version of the program focuses on the themes of the first four workshops offered in the elementary and middle school versions, and provides a focused campus visit for 10th graders and their parents to begin using the information gained in the workshops.  Parents and students will begin to explore the connections between high school, college and careers, learn about preparing for the admissions process, understand the financial aid and scholarships processes, and develop a plan for enterin a four-year university.  Workshops are delivered at each of the 8 participating high schools, and transportation is provided from the high school to the university for the campus visit in December. 

On December 12, 2009 over 1200 students and parents fromthe 8 high schools will descend upon The Univeristy of Arizona campus for an in-depth look at how to navigate a campus tour, discussions with current UA students and parents from their high schools, and a faculty lecture to get a feel for the real university experience.  The visit ends with a short cultural celebration and certificates of completion.

This program is free of charge, and is funded by Excelencia in Education's Walmart SEMILLAS Grants program.
