Program details

College Academy for Parents (CAP) is a program designed to help parents of elementary school students create a plan for their child’s educational future. While we know not every child will go to college, every child should have the option to choose to go to college. CAP does this by providing parents and students with information on how to maximize their options for college admission and scholarships

The College Academy for Parents is offered at no cost to all parents at each of the Sunnyside Unified School District elementary schools.Space is limited to 20 families from each school on a first-come, first-served basis.

The University of Arizona staff and professors lead weekly workshops for parents to explain how college can benefit your student and your family, how to prepare and apply for college, and how to pay for it. UA professors will also lead workshops about each of the main subject areas, and how you can help your child learn better.

No need to find a babysitter! While you attend your workshop, college students lead fun and educational hands-on activities for children in grades K-6. The topics are similar to the ones parents learn, and provide opportunities for family discussion. Middle and high school students are welcomed to participate in the parent workshops. The Sunnyside Unified School District will also provide childcare for kids ages 2-4.

In addition to the workshops, there are two Saturday field trips (March 2 & April 13) to the university, where you and your family will learn about opportunities to visit the campus on your own, as well as participate in fun activities. The program ends with a final trip to campus for the parent graduation ceremony (May 1).

CAP is a comprehensive program that includes the ENTIRE family in the college preparation process! It's never too early to start planning for college.

2014 CAP family

“My kids still talk about going to college. When we visited their dad in Minnesota we were next to two colleges, my kids all summer kept saying they were going to that college (one was Concordia College and the other was University of Minnesota), except for Bryan, he is a dedicated University of Arizona student and wants to continue the CAP program. It is amazing what this program has done for my family, my daughter is even saving up her money for college.  I want to thank you and all the wonderful staff, I am truly thankful we were a part of this program. I will definitely recommend this to any family I come across.”
